Explores old-time gamesmanship in America from riverboats to racetracks, and the legal and illegal history of gambling in pre-World War I America. From notorious gambling havens like Chicago and New Orleans to lesser-known outposts in Indiana and Ohio, Asbury examines the gambling houses, big and small. Details the lives of some of America's most famous gamblers, including Mike McDonald, John Morrissey, and Richard Canfield, and their infamous counterparts like Canada Bill and Charley Black Eyes, who made their names as grifters and con men. 492 Pgs. 2006

Review:
This is the most detailed history of American gambling imaginable, and probably always will be; much of the information the author was able to gather in the 30's must have come from personal contacts and sources long lost. The book is a great read and puts a lot of things into their proper perspective, including the forgotten dominance of faro as the premier gambling game of the 19th century and the universality of illegal gambling in the culture at all levels of society.
